Based on its
own Calendar, Ethiopia is the only country that celebrated its
millennium this year. As we approach a new era there is great
expectancy in the soul of our nation to see a new light, to sing
a new song, and start a new course for now and eternal future.
We are a nation
that has been suffering from natural disasters and self inflicted
pains for centuries. Most of our people are going through dark hours
of hunger devastation, and humiliation which still persists in different
forms. Chronic poverty, HIV Aids, regional conflicts, unskilled
work force, ever increasing illiteracy, injustice, and abuse of
power are some of our challenges to mention a few.
Though thankfully
declared “African Millennium”; Ethiopia must rise to
the occasion and conduct its own house cleaning and soul searching.
We can be a great role model for bringing peace and reconciliation
by being merciful to the unfortunate ones who are behind bars in
our devastating and humiliating prisons. As individuals and a nation
we have to learn how to talk to our neighbors, make peace, and start
a new course of action. If life is short, why do we misuse it? If
life is worth living why are we so miserable? Cheer up! Help is
on the way!
If we are expecting
a transforming change in the new millennium we have to take healthy
steps right away. Here are some of the things we should consider
to help us achieve our goals:
1. Our attitude
about ourselves and our neighbors should be changed
2. We have to stop majoring in our weakness and be grateful for
our strength
3. Stop making negative comments & hateful statements about
races and others
4. Be thankful for what God has done for our nation for the past
2000 years
5. Have a positive outlook about ourselves as a nation blessed with
great potential to make a difference in the global community
6. Be optimist about the future
7. Be an encourager in your views when you meet people
8. Make a commitment to stop divisive spirit and be a peace maker
9. Be loving and caring for each other with grateful attitude
10. Avoid negative sentiments that block healthy communication with
our fellow men
11. Develop healthy attitude that young generation appreciate and
be part of
12. May our millennium be the year of “Golden Rule”:
“Do to others as you would have them do unto you”
13. Let us discover the love & potential that God has imparted
in each human being
14. Let us impart a sense of dignity and human value to each person
we encounter
Have
a Blessed Millennium!
