Background:

The country of Ethiopia has been synonymous with drought, poverty and ethnic strife for centuries. In the minds of many, the word Ethiopia conjures up memories of hungry and dying children, desolate terrain, and armed youth in guerilla ethnic warfare. The National Reconciliation Initiative operates on the premise that Ethiopia will continue to feel the compounded effect of calamities as long as the animosity between the various ethnic groups exists. Ethiopia cannot advance economically or socially as long as ethnic groups are not reconciled.

Towards this end, the National Reconciliation Initiative has been active in awareness raising for the past 4 years. The climax of the initiative is the week long conference on forgiveness and reconciliation in March of 2003, in which every ethnic group will be represented. This time of prayer and seeking and granting of forgiveness among the various tribal groups will be conducted in 100 public squares across the nation. At the end of the week, representative community and church leaders will lead the nation in repentance to God. This initiative, which is the first of its kind in the history of the nation, aims to expose the evils of tribalism that has tormented Ethiopia for centuries and invites the entire nation to repentance and reconciliation. This undertaking will not only create an atmosphere of trust and acceptance but it will also cause God’s blessing to flow on the nation.

This nationwide commission has popular support not only from churches but also from government leaders, civil society, diplomatic missions, etc. It utilizes the services of 600,000 Ethiopian volunteers and will be conducted in 100 centers across the nation where more than 6 million Ethiopians are expected to attend.
What makes this initiative unique is that it is initiated and carried out by Ethiopians and that it enjoys popular support within the entire social spectrum. In the past, a lot of attempts have been made to bring peace and reconciliation but none of them had long term impact as no roundtable discussion on its own can solve a problem of this magnitude but a movement with The Lord of Hosts at the very core of it. Based on the biblical promise “if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.” II Ch. 7:14; we have been encouraged to take on this ambitious task of leading the first Christian country in Africa through a trasformative process of prayer, humility and forgiveness.

It is our sincere hope that you will be join hands with us on this historical event as Ethiopia bows before the Lord Almighty in humility and reverence and as brothers and sisters from different ethnic groups come together in forgiveness and acceptance. Your prayers and financial support are crucial for the success of this endeavor.
